The Impact of the War on Tigray on the Ethiopia’s Economy

Teklay of Tghat sits down with economist Dr Tsegay G Tekleselassie to discuss the disastrous impact the war on Tigray has had on Ethiopia’s economy. Tsegay argues Ethiopia’s singular focus on the war has meant that its economy is on the brink of collapse (soaring inflation, GDP plummeting, unemployment rising, investors deserting the country, etc). He says the average person, ostensibly far removed from Tigray, is paying a huge price, as the country’s focus and resources have been commandeered to finance the war. Contrary to popular opinion, he argues Tigray before the war used to be a net contributor to the Ethiopian economy and, therefore, that its removal from the Ethiopian economy has had a deleterious impact to the country. He advises that it is in the best interest of everyone for the blockade of Tigray to end as soon as possible.
